TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — The job of State Attorney is to prosecute cases. The State Attorney elected to represent Florida’s Second Judicial Circuit oversees a staff of more than 40 Assistant State Attorneys in prosecuting cases in six counties: Leon, Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Liberty and Wakulla.

Long time State Attorney Willie Meggs is challenged this year by Pete Williams. .
PETE WILLIAMS William is running on the ticket as a Republican. .
Williams is a graduate of Yale University where he earned a BA in Economics. He also received a Masters of Business Administration degree from Stanford University, and a law degree from the University of Florida. .
His law career includes working as a State Attorney, Senior Assistant Attorney General, and in 2003 was appointed by Governor Charlie Crist to serve as Florida’s Statewide Prosecutor. Williams is married to Janet and they have three children. .

Meggs is running as a Democrat for reelection for what would be his eighth term as State Attorney. .
A graduate of Florida State University Law School, Meggs has also worked as an Assistant State Attorney, Investigator and patrol officer at Tallahassee Police Department, and Deputy Sergeant for the Leon County Sheriff’s Office. .
Meggs is married to Judy and they have three children and several grandchildren. .

THE DEBATE The two candidates squared off for a WTXL debate. .
Topics range from trial convict rates to selective prosecution. Candidates even discuss a question from a WTXL viewer pertaining to process on how to decide whether a case should be prosecuted. In the player to the right, you can watch a preview of tonight’s debate. .
The debate will air in its entirety tonight on WTXL-ABC27 News at 11 p.m. .
